JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of a Crew Leader or Superintendent of the Street Department. To perform heavy and light manual work requiring less than journey level skill using a variety of routine and common tools and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform semi-skilled tasks in connection with public works maintenance and construction.
- Perform tasks in a variety of trades not requiring journey level skills.
- Use tools and operates equipment not requiring a lengthy learning period or complex skill.
- Duties include cleaning and maintaining sidewalks, streets, and roads working as a member of a crew; sweeping and loading debris onto trucks; operating power mowers and weed eaters to cut ROW of city streets; cutting tree limbs; raking and loading leaves from ROW; and loading and unloading trucks with supplies and equipment.
- Perform related work as assigned or required.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
- Brooms, rakes, lawn mowers, weed eaters and blades, chain saw, hedge trimmers, and other power tools.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSE:
- High School Diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- One year of experience in manual labor is preferred.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to complete simple reports.
- Perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance.
- Use hand tools and operate equipment safely and efficiently.

JOB TITLE: ASSOCIATE ENGINEER

JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the City Engineer. The primary duties consist of assisting the City Engineer and other departments in matters concerning traffic, construction, development, erosion control and drainage.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Review commercial site plans for compliance to regulations.
- Review subdivision plats for compliance with applicable ordinances and regulations.
- Respond to complaints regarding street, environmental and drainage problems from citizens, other departments and officials.
- Coordinate/assist with various surveying projects.
- Identify and present engineering recommendations to the Planning Commission on proposed developments.
- Perform minor traffic studies and/or traffic counts as necessary.
- Prepare contract documents for road, bridge and traffic signal projects that are planned within the department. Review contracts for projects designed by consulting firms for roads, bridges and traffic signal projects.
- Prepare estimates for project costs.
- Monitor, inspect and coordinate commercial construction activities.
- Review, coordinate and approve road closure requests.
- Review and inspect compliance of the American with Disabilities Act regulations for improvements to City rights-of-way and facilities.
- Coordinate activities with the Traffic Sign Staff.
- Coordinate work with consulting Engineering firms on traffic signals and road improvements.
- Design and coordinate traffic signal and road improvement projects with JEA, Traffic Sign Department and Street Department.
- Rate streets for resurfacing projects.
- Assist in preparation of operating and capital budgets for street, traffic signal and drainage projects.
- Attend pre-construction conferences for road, signal and drainage projects.
- Serve as a liaison to Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).
- Make recommendations concerning capital improvement projects.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the City Engineer or the Mayor.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:
- B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
- Professional Engineer in State of Tennessee or eligible for certification
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Core post-degree engineering experience
- Knowledge of subdivision planning, construction standards and regulations
- Experience with applying the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Able to exercise good judgement.
- Able to maintain an effective working relationship with the general public, contractors, co-workers and others.

JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Shop Supervisor and the Director of the City Garage. To perform preventative maintenance and repair work on all City vehicles and machinery. Performs semi-skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment for the City of Jackson.\
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Plan, carry out and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
- Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-tools.
- Test, service and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
- Repair brakes, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, ignition, air, exhaust, and related systems.
- Change and repair tires and tubes.
- Evaluate status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and perform or schedule needed repairs.
- Make road calls for service to vehicles and equipment.
- Pick up supplies and tools as needed.
- Must be able to use a heavy-duty 2- or 3-ton jack to lift heavy equipment in a safe manner.
- Secure tires in the tire cage when airing them up.
- Must be able to operate the tire changer machine to change tires.
- Conduct various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
- Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work;

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ten (10) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Heavy Equipment Maintenance/Repair Certificate or ASE Master Technician Certification.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (without an airbrake restriction).
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics;
- Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and generators;
- Price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment;
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities;
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion;
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
