City of Jackson, TN Fire Department wants you to “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”
Posted on 10/01/2021

Jackson, Tenn. – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is teaming up with the City of Jackson Fire Department to support Fire Prevention Week, an annual public awareness campaign promoting home fire safety.

This fall Jackson Fire Department will be sharing resource materials such as, brochures, magnets, posters and more with schools and communities during Prevention Week, October 3 – 9.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” focuses on educating children and adults about smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms, their necessity, and how the sounds they make can help save lives.

A chirping alarm needs attention. Replace the batteries or the entire unit if it is over 10 years old. If you do not know how old the unit is, replace it!

Key messages around this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign will include the following:

What is your alarm telling you?

Smoke Alarms

  •  A continued set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep means smoke or fire. Get out call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single “chirp” every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years
  •  Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of it life and the unit must be replaced.

CO Alarms

  •  A continuous set of four loud beeps – beep, beep, beep, beep—means carbon monoxide is present in your home. Go Outside, call 9-1-1 and stay out.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be replaced.
  • CO alarms have “end of life” sounds that vary by manufacturer. This means it is time to purchase a new CO alarm.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
